Magnetic Flow Meters for Abrasive and Erosive Service

Magnetic Flow Meters for Abrasive Service

Magnetic flow meters (magmeters) apply Faraday’s Law of Electromagnetic Induction to measure flow. They are specifically designed for conductive fluids like water, acids, caustic liquids, and slurries. A magnetic field is created by running current through a coil surrounding a flow tube. As a conductive media/liquid/slurry passes through the flow tube and magnetic field, a voltage is created. Electrodes inside the flow tube measure the voltage. Higher velocity increases the voltage, and a proportional relationship between flow and voltage output is established. This output is then calculated and converted to volumetric flow.

Advantages of Magnetic Flow Meters:

  • No moving parts
  • Little or no pressure drop
  • Excellent turn down
  • Wide pipe size range
  • Responsive
  • Long life

Magnetic flowmeters differ in materials, size, corrosion resistance, pressure and temperature performance. Properly applying magnetic flowmeters for abrasive and/or erosive slurry measurement is one of the most challenging applications for plant engineers and maintenance managers to address. The proper combination of design components is critical.

Custom magnetic flowmeters with erosion and abrasion resistant design elements are a specialty of Thompson Equipment Company (TECO). These magnetic flow meters are capable of withstanding a variety of highly erosive applications and corrosive slurries.
